Bats in the Attic

We have bats. They are great during the summer because we also have a lot of bugs. And really they aren’t bad during the winter because they hibernate. However upon closer examination it has come to our attention that they must have wintered in the attic. This is an old house and the siding desperately needs redone so there are apparently lots of places for them to be able to get inside and do that. Now I was living in blissful unawareness thinking that they flew south for the winter. ( Obviously I didn’t research this I just took it for granted.)

This last week has been unseasonably warm with it getting up into the 50s. I had to of course jinx it by raking the yard and daring to talk about the garden. Last night it snowed.

Around 4 this morning I’m awaken by chirping, fluttering and soft bumping sounds and immediately I knew what it was. The only problem was, what do you do about it at 4 am? My mind sounded a bit like this….

As long it stays on the other side of the room…nope here it comes! Where is it going to land, where is it going to land, where is it going to land????  AAAAAHHHHHHH!!! NOT MY FEET!!!! Oh why did they have to be hot and sticking out of the blankets?? thrashing of feet * OOOWWWWWW!!!! Oh! thank you Simon (the cat) for attacking! But wait, where is it now? I don’t hear it anymore…..oh crap where is it now?

I didn’t get much sleep after that.

I think, and this is just my theory here so there is lots of room for error, that the warmer weather woke this guy up and then it was too cold for him to go out so he went exploring in the only warm place he could find. Don’t ask me how it got into the main part of the house. I don’t know. What I do want to know is this, how do I get them out? I don’t want to get rid of them completely because they are very useful and even fun to watch when they stay outside. But I would much rather buy them a bat house and have them live there instead of in here with us! So when Spring officially gets here, how do I get them all out of the house at the same time so I can plug up the holes? Anyone? Any advice? Please!!!
